I've watched the Dark Knight.
It's a very good film.
It's tragic, but good.
I've forgotten the last time since I've watched a film that I have come out so emotionally affected.
It really pulls at your heart strings, this film.
It gives you pause and makes you wonder about your life.
The film is about chaos and anarchy.
And about people. People like us, living our everyday lives without ever knowing the sacrifices that others are willing to make for the greater good.
It is a superhero movie, true.
But in this movie, where the villain communicates more with the public, is a voice that compels people to return to their basest instinct of survival is very much a reminiscent of the times we are in.
Where doing good isn't always in our best interest.
Where we are more likely to profit by destroying what others have built, by ignoring our own morality in order for our own personal gain.
It doesn't help that others are so willing to do the same to us.
The Joker, played beautifully by Heath Ledger, is us.
The collective voice that silently but surely moves in selfish ways.
It is not evil. It is purely animalistic instinct. Survival of the fittest. Where morals could get you killed.
And then there is the voice that gives us reason.
That is what makes us human.
The voice of compassion, love and reason.
The voice of what Batman stands for.
He is us as well. Moving with the purpose of good, but much more silent than the collective unison.
How a singular person's actions can inspire. Can lead us to being better than we are. And we should always try to achieve more than we already have so that the future will be brighter for all.
And Harvey Dent is a mirror for all of us.
We all try to do the right things. Try to bring people out of the darkness. Sometimes we resort to dark methods in order to achieve this. Sometimes we do it out of selfish motivation, or selfless in some instances.
But all it takes is a singular event to destroy our faith. To make all that was right, wrong and to turn us into people who are willing to do nothing and leave things up to chance.
This film isn't about a comic.
It's about us.
We are able to connect so well with the characters because they are a mirror of us. Or who we could be.
And why now I feel as if this movie has affected me much more than any other film before.
